Transportation Services

The American Red Cross, Middlesex Central CT Chapter has operated a transportation service for the Elderly and Disabled in Middletown for over 36 years!! Not being a core component of what the Red Cross normally does, it must be able to support itself to survive. We get our funding from the local towns we serve, contracts and donations. In 2008 we made over 35,000 trips for employment, medical appointments, social / recreational visits, nutritional programs, shopping trips and more.

We have two operations in our chapter. The first is based out of our Middletown office that supports the towns of Middletown, Middlefield, Durham, Portland and East Hampton. For the cost of $1.50 we will take the residents of these towns that are over the age of 60 or those of any age that qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act anywhere they may need to go within those towns.

Our New Britain branch office has a similar operation where we will transport any resident over the age of 60 that resides in New Britain, Plainville or Berlin/Kensington/East Berlin to any destination within those towns and also Farmington, Bristol or Newington. Because the New Britain branch has less revenue streams we must charge a $35.00 yearly subscription plus $2.00 for a one way ride. For trips to Farmington, Bristol or Newington the charge is $5.00 for a one way ride.

Both operations have wheelchair accessible buses and can accommodate handicapped or disabled riders that may or may not be able to climb the stairs to get in or out of a bus.

Both programs rely upon the generosity of volunteer drivers who give up their time to transport our elderly and disabled clients to any destination for any reason as long as it is within the towns we serve. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering as a driver in our Middletown program, please call 860/347-3313. Questions or inquiries about the New Britain program can be directed to 860/229-1631.
