Blood Services Red Cross Encourages Blood Donors to Help Keep Up with Demand click here for our area blood drives In Connecticut alone, 650 units of blood must be collected each day just to meet the basic needs of area hospitals. The only source of blood is a healthy volunteer donor. The American Red Cross is relying on the generosity of its neighbors to help make up this shortfall and ensure that no patient goes without the blood he or she needs. Donated blood is used to help trauma patients, transplant recipients, and those receiving treatment for life threatening illnesses. In the United States, blood is needed for transfusions every two seconds. There is no substitute for blood. If you are 17 or older, weigh 110 pounds or more and are in generally good health, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to make an appointment to give “the gift of life.” Connecticut residents may also request an appointment for this or any other blood drive by visiting www.bloodct.org. Positive ID is required at the time of your blood donation. The mission of the American Red Cross, Connecticut Blood Services Region is to partner with the community to provide a safe and adequate blood supply for patients at the state’s 31 transfusing hospitals and acute care facilities. The Red Cross relies entirely on volunteer blood donors to meet the transfusion needs of patients across the state of Connecticut. The Red Cross needs to collect at least 650 units of whole blood each day to meet patient demand in the state. This is possible only with your help. The need for donated blood is constant. SOMEONE NEEDS A BLOOD TRANSFUSION. Yet fewer than 5 percent of the people who are able to give blood actually do so - and most of them give only once a year. That’s why the American Red Cross works so hard to recruit new blood donors. Because hospital patients throughout our state need your help. Help is easy to give. All you have to do is take an hour and donate blood. Every blood donation you make can help as many as three different patients - people rushed to hospitals after a trauma, children fighting leukemia, fire fighters who’ve been burned, grandparents needing heart surgery or hip replacement - people like the ones in your neighborhood, or in your own family - these are the kinds of people your blood donation will help.
